Women Can Can

Head Spaces

Doreen Dubreuil

Sculpture / Assemblage

Created for an exhibition at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery, the title references the cancan dance—an exuberant, rebellious performance historically associated with female autonomy, display, and defiance of social restraint. Materials associated with femininity are reasserted as sources of strength, revealing the tension between visibility and entanglement, beauty and burden. The sculpture ultimately affirms complexity as power, capturing the lasting imprint of courage and resistance beyond the moment of performance.
