The Fisher King / Head Spaces

At the intersection of craft and curiosity.

Doreen Dubreuil’s Head Spaces brings together sculptural heads assembled from beads, buttons, coins, and found objects. Each face becomes a meeting place for materials with histories of their own.

The works move between playfulness and unease. A joke opens onto a question; an ornament becomes a sign of memory, value, or belonging. Their densely worked surfaces reward an unhurried look.

A face, many readings.

Identity runs through the collection as something assembled, performed, remembered, and revised. From the exuberance of Women Can Can to the quieter intimacy of Love, these heads offer different ways to think about what a portrait can hold.

Women Can Can was created for an exhibition at the Gulf of Georgia Cannery. Its title connects the cancan dance with ideas of female autonomy and resistance.

Art & craft, together.

Small, repeated acts of placing and joining give these objects their presence. Looking closely reveals how the smallest element can change the expression of an entire face.
